The Last Days of Steam 8mm Film Documentary 1966/7 The Last Days of Steam on the British Rail Network (Filmed 1966/67 – An Historic 8mm Film) Back in 1966 and 1967, with my trusty 8mm cine camera in hand, I set off across the country—travelling from the South West through Wales, and across the North West and East of England—to capture the final months of steam traction on British Rail, just before diesel-electric locomotives took over. I was 17 years old at the time, and filmmaking was a big part of my life. Many of my films featured friends and fun, but this one was a personal project—dedicated to my love of steam and a changing era of British rail history. The original narration and music had to be removed due to copyright issues, but thanks to modern technology and a bit of patience, I’ve reworked the film to preserve its heart. Sadly, not all of the original audio survived the 58 years since it was recorded, but I’ve carefully restored what I could. Drawing on my extensive archive of steam heritage railway recordings, I was able to match and dub authentic sound where needed. A special thank you to Chris Squires at Save Those Memories for the high-quality scanning and preservation work. Finally, this film is dedicated to my lifelong friend Bob Hammond, who was looking forward to seeing it again. Bob passed away a few months ago, and I miss him and his sense of humour. RIP Bob! / artynutz
