The sqadia.com team brings you another detailed anatomy lecture. This time we are covering the sphenoid bone anatomy. You can remember the sphenoid bone as a bat-shaped or butterfly-shaped cranial bone, Its name is derived from the Greek word ‘sphenoeides’, which means wedge-shaped. Since it seems to be wedged between the other cranial bones. The sphenoid bone location is at the middle part of the base of the skull sitting anteriorly in the cranium. It contributes to the middle cranial fossa. and it also borders the floor of the orbit. Let us summarize all the in-depth knowledge you will gain after watching this lecture. ▬ 📌 Anatomy Mnemonic to Memorize Cranial Bone Our Anatomy mascot “Max” is back! Bringing you another anatomy mnemonic to remember the cranial bones is “PEST OF”. 📍P ➔ Parietal bone 📍E ➔ Ethmoid bone 📍S ➔ Sphenoid bone 📍T ➔ Temporal bone 📍O ➔ Occipital bone 📍F ➔ Frontal bone ▬ 📌 Sphenoid Bone Articulations The sphenoid bone has been termed the keystone of the cranial floor, as it is in contact with all the other cranial bones. For ease, let's divide them into paired and unpaired bone articulations. 🟠 Unpaired bones include the occipital, vomer, ethmoid, and frontal bones. 🟠 Paired bones include temporal, parietal, zygomatic, and lastly the palatine bones. ▬ 📌 Sutures of Sphenoid Bone There are 4 main sutures of the sphenoid bone: 🔵 Sphenofrontal suture 🔵 Sphenoparietal suture 🔵 Sphenosquamosal suture 🔵 Spheno-occipital suture ▬ 📌 Sphenoid Bone Landmarks The main anatomical sphenoid bone landmarks are the body, paired greater and lesser wings, and also two pterygoid processes of sphenoid. ▬ 📌 Body of Sphenoid Bone We are going to study the 5 surfaces of the body of the sphenoid bone. The major sphenoid bone landmark on the body is the sella turcica which houses the pituitary gland. We also have another anatomical landmarks on the body of the sphenoid bone like the dorsum sellae, chiasmatic groove, sphenoidal air sinuses (sphenoidal concha), middle and posterior clinoid process, carotid sulcus, and rostrum of sphenoid. ▬ 📌 Greater Wings of Sphenoid The greater wings of the sphenoid are present laterally in the body of the sphenoid bone. It has four surfaces and four borders. Four surfaces are cerebral, orbital, lateral (temporal and infratemporal), and maxillary surface. Four borders are squamous, zygomatic frontal, and parietal borders. The greater wings of sphenoid have 3 main foramina: foramen rotundum, foramen spinosum, and foramen ovale. ▬ 📌 Lesser Wing of Sphenoid Arising from the anterior part of the body of the sphenoid bone, we have the lesser wings of the sphenoid. They form the lateral part of the optic canal. An orbital fissure is the portion between the greater wings of the sphenoid and the lesser wings of the sphenoid that allows the passage of many structures. In this anatomy lecture, we will learn the two surfaces and two borders of the lesser wing. Also, learning about the anatomical landmarks like the anterior clinoid process, with impressions or juga cerebralia. ☛ Surfaces: Superior surface (or cerebral surface) and inferior surface (or orbital surface) ☛ Borders: posterior and anterior border ▬ 📌 Pterygoid Processes of Sphenoid Bone Pointed inferiorly, we can observe the pterygoid processes of the sphenoid. “Pterygoid” is Greek for “wing-like”. Major parts of the pterygoid process are the lateral pterygoid plates and medial pterygoid plates. We will detail the other anatomical features diagrammatically like pterygoid fissure, pterygoid notch, pterygoid hamulus, pterygospinous process (civini process), and vomerovaginal groove. ▬ 📌 Sphenoid Bone Muscle Attachments The sphenoid bone muscle attachments are mainly involved in mastication. We have the medial pterygoid and lateral pterygoid muscle, with a superior constrictor of the pharynx attachment at the medial pterygoid plate and tensor villi palatini. Let’s learn these muscle attachments with a fun mnemonic. ▬ 📌 Sphenoid Bone Ligaments Attachments The sphenoid bone has a few intrinsic ligaments. Namely, pterygoid-spinous, inter-clinoid ligament, and carotid-clinoid ligament. The extrinsic ligaments of the sphenoid bone are sphenomandibular ligament, pterygomandibular ligaments/raphe, and pterygomaxillary ligament.
