A playthrough of Electronic Arts' 2005 adventure game for the Nintendo DS, The Sims 2. On PC, The Sims is a gaming staple that needs no introduction, but the GBA and DS games in the series are a different beast entirely. Rather than attempting to shoehorn the gameplay of the computer games into underpowered, memory-starved handheld devices, Amaze Entertainment developed a line-up of plot-centered adventure games that incorporate select elements of the PCs games. In The Sims 2 for the DS, your Sim finds himself (or herself) stranded in a remote desert town after his (or her) car breaks down, roped into becoming the manager of a failing hotel. It's his job to make improvements and attract customers, and somehow, this spirals into a thoroughly absurd quest to save mankind from an alien invasion. You have to do normal Sims things like buy furniture, eat, and shower, but these tasks are secondary to carrying out the wishes of your guests - things like burying wriggling packages in the desert for a mob boss and buying designer lipsticks for a cult leader - all while attempting to appease their frustrations through a series of social interaction minigames and to earn enough money to keep the business afloat. The Sims 2's story is full of WTF moments that'll leave you laughing in disbelief, and the gameplay supports it quite well. The minigames are entertaining, the eccentric cast of characters are fun, and the elements that have been cherry picked from the computer games are balanced to give the game a Sims-like flavor without drowning players in the tedium of micromanagement. The presentation is a big upgrade coming off of the GBA games' prerendered sprites and backdrops. The 3D environments and character models are nicely detailed and move smoothly, and the framerate is surprisingly solid for a fully 3D game running on the DS. The Sims 2 for the DS isn't your everyday gaming experience, and that's what I love about it. If you have a sense of humor and can appreciate a game that gives the middle finger to convention, check it out! At 5:27:41, you can see the bad ending that you get if you try to cheat by rolling back the DS's system clock. (Here you go, Lexington. Sorry to keep you waiting!) _____________ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
