We analyze the Karpov Variation of the Caro-Kann Defense, which begins: 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Nd7 We briefly consider White's replies, 5.Nf3 and the dangerous 5.Bc4, which can lead to an opening trap. Then we move on to the Modern Variation, which begins with 5.Ng5. We discuss the various pitfalls Black can fall into by playing h6 too early, including that which occurred in the 6th game of the 1997 match between Deep Blue and Garry Kasparov. In addition to the main line in the Modern Variation, we look at an alternate system of development advocated for by GM Seirawan. Correction: At 7:37 I incorrectly state that the black knight can play to e4 to stave off mate for an additional move. But, of course the knight is pinned by my queen. So, Ne4 is illegal.
