DERBYSHIRE DALES PARISH #59 OF 109: KIRK IRETON Kirk Ireton is a hillside parish sitting 700 feet above sea level on the slope above Carsington Water. Kirk means church, whilst the name “Ireton” comes from the Saxon hyre‑tun, meaning “Irishman’s enclosure”. This gives the village a rare Anglo‑Scandinavian hybrid name. The area around Kirk Ireton shows signs of very early settlement, with the village dating back to at least the Bronze Age. The Wirksworth Hundred, where the parish sits, contains Roman roads and ancient field systems. During the medieval period, Kirk Ireton developed as a farming parish. The village layout, with its narrow lanes and stone buildings, still follows its medieval pattern. Many of the oldest houses date from the 17th century and are built from locally quarried sandstone. After the Second World War, the number of working farms dropped from over thirty to around six within forty years. Families such as the Fords, Matkins, Rowlands, Walkers and Wards have farmed the area for generations. Many old barns have since been converted into homes. One of the most important landmarks here is Holy Trinity Church, a Norman building with arcades dating from the 12th century. The church is famous for its wedding custom known as “roping”, where children block the road with a rope until the groom pays a silver toll. The village is also known for the Barley Mow, one of the oldest pubs in Derbyshire. The building dates from the 17th century and was one of the last pubs in Britain to accept decimal money in 1971. The landlady, Lillian Ford, refused to use the new currency at first. Kirk Ireton once had four other pubs: The Wheatsheaf, The Old Bull’s Head, The Windmill and The Gate. Although these have closed, their buildings remain part of the village’s character. Otherwise the narrow lanes and stone cottages give the place a timeless feel The parish also has a Primitive Methodist chapel, a church school built in 1882, and several historic farms. These buildings show how active village life once was, and many of those buildings still stand today. The village shop is another interesting feature. The Post Office closed in 2008, but the building later reopened as a community‑run shop. The premises were once stables, and the old hay racks remain above the shelving. This gives the shop a unique charm that visitors enjoy. Kirk Ireton has also been home to some notable people. The scholar Anthony Blackwall was born here. The landscape artist George Turner lived at the Barley Mow and his paintings of Derbyshire scenes are still admired today.
