You are not a young man anymore, which means the way you worked out in your 20’s might not be as effective as you are in your 40’s. You have to build muscle differently now, and there are many different ways to do that as a man over 40. As you get older, if you are training to failure, you are going to have a higher risk of injuring yourself. Your ability to recover from your workouts slows down over time, and testosterone and growth hormone levels may be lower. You want to workout smarter, not harder if you are a man over 40 trying to build muscle. Listen to your body, if it is hurting take a break, don’t push through it. Fighting through pain is not a good idea when it comes to building muscle as an older guy. There is a difference between feeling the burn in a good workout, and actually being in pain from pushing too hard. Know your body and know your limits when you are trying to build muscle as an older man. Another huge key for building muscle is TIME UNDER TENSION. This is the optimal way to build more muscle from your workouts. Aim for a higher rep range and use lighter weights in your workouts. There may be a time when you should push yourself to failure, but that depends on your starting point and your workout history. Changing exercise techniques can also spark muscle growth. When your goal is to build muscle as opposed to strength, you want to aim for the 10-12 rep range for your exercises. Going to failure is safer at higher rep ranges and less weight. That is safer for your joints and central nervous system. You don’t want to train to failure consistently, maybe do it for 4-6 weeks at a time.
