Cold Water Planted Tank 1 Year Later - Setup, Progression, Lessons Learned! This is my unheated, planted White Cloud Mountain Minnow tank, running entirely at room temperature year-round with no heater. In winter, it drops to around 18°C (64°F), and in summer it peaks near 25°C (77°F). With rising energy prices, I think unheated cold water aquariums like this will only grow in popularity—and I’m already planning to set up more next year. Now that this setup has reached its one-year mark, I wanted to share how it’s evolved, what I’ve learned, and my future plans. The tank is a 45L (12 US gallon) planted aquarium, scaped with Anubias, Bucephalandra, Helanthium tenellum ‘Green’, and floating plants like duckweed and water lettuce. Substrate is Fluval Stratum, chosen for its nutrient retention and suitability for low-tech setups. Filtration is handled by a hang-on-back filter, modified with foam and filter floss for better biological and mechanical performance. Lighting is from a Hygger HG76, which has kept plant growth steady through seasonal changes. Cycling was done using a fishless, plant-in method—though in hindsight, the Dark Start approach would’ve helped avoid early algae issues. Stocking includes eight golden White Cloud Mountain Minnows, Amano shrimp, yellow Neocaridina shrimp, and ramshorn snails. The minnows have bred multiple times throughout the year, even in cooler winter water. Plant growth slowed in the colder months but bounced back in spring, with Helanthium tenellum carpeting the foreground and Anubias occasionally flowering—something I’ve only seen in my unheated tanks. Looking ahead, I may upgrade the minnows to a 54L tank, start a second setup for the standard variety, and possibly add Medaka rice fish. I’ll also be tackling the ramshorn snail population soon.
