Whenever I visited home the past couple years, I been wanting to find more older family photos from my childhood. Two holidays ago, my mom showed me this new box of photos from her side of the family that went all the way back to not only her childhood, but even further back to the childhood of her parents. I knew if I didn’t grab those photos then, then they would probably get lost so I asked my mom if I could hold onto them (and some from my childhood). Out of all the photos, the one that really blew me away was this wedding portrait of my grandparents from my mother’s side. It’s hard to gauge what the exact date or year it was but I want to guess it was taken sometime in the early 20th century (when Taiwan was still under Japanese occupation). It was interesting to see that they were wearing more western style wedding attire. Turns out the Japanese occupation brought certain western lifestyle influences to Taiwan. At the time, the Japanese government thought that western style weddings were more “civilized” and “modern”. All this being said, there are so many other cool photos that I didn’t show in this video but I really want to find a way to share them soon. In the meantime, my goal is to digitally archive these photos little by little this year and try to find other family photos before they get lost. / casperyen
