"Wicked Man" was written by Jason Deere and the recording appears on the Nashville Tribute Band album "Witness: A Nashville Tribute to the Book of Mormon". Omni is one of the most fascinating and often misunderstood people in the Book of Mormon (The Book of Omni, Chapter 1: 1-3). He was in the line of prophets. His father handed him the records kept since Lehi left Jerusalem. He kept them and preserved them, and passed them on to his son or we would not have them. But in his entire life he only wrote three verses. And, in those verses he tells us, “I of myself am a wicked man”. Many readers see those words and pause wondering what he did, or contemplate and perhaps even judge, why he felt that way about himself. But Omni wrote one other thing that is worth noting. “In my days, I would that ye should know that I fought much with the sword to preserve my people…from falling into the hands of their enemies.” Today, we send soldiers to Afghanistan, Iraq or any number of forward places that most of us never even know happened and in some cases they return after a year barely able to function in society. In today’s warfare, most never even see the faces of those they are fighting. But Omni says that in his days, he “fought much with the sword”. And in the warfare of his day, the chances are very good that Omni could see right into the eyes, and sometimes even smell the breath, of those who he gutted with his sword. Impossible to know in our day what effect years of fighting like that could have on a person’s heart and mind. Whether he knew wickedness, felt wickedness, or was haunted by wickedness is something only Omni could answer as to why he said, “I of myself and a wicked man”. We should remember that there is no place for judgement regarding any person who has fought for their people and may have taken the lives of others in conflict. Veterans are often the only people who understand other veterans, but sometimes veterans still feel alone in their individual experience and “less than” because of those things weighing heavy on them. Of all, only one individual has lived all of those hardships with them, and that is Jesus. Only one person walks that road with them, every step, wading through every memory with them. Jesus. Only one person can and will lift them far above that burden for good once and for all. Jesus. God bless all men and women who have fought to preserve their people, and may wear the scars of war on their bodies and on their hearts.
