The summit in Malaysia came at an important time for the world economy, as members hoped to make real progress in the face of high US tariffs that could slow growth in the Asia-Pacific region. The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) covers 30 per cent of the world’s economy, with Association of Southeast Asian Nations members at its core, along with major East Asian countries like China, Japan, South Korea, as well as Australia and New Zealand. The agreement was signed in 2020 in response to US trade barriers. Acknowledging these challenges, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said “the strategic importance” of the partnership “is clearer than ever”.
