Why have a significant segment of the Bodo people, the foundational ethnolinguistic group of the Brahmaputra Valley, adopted Christianity?. This video delves into an ethnographic and sociological inquiry to answer this complex question, moving beyond popular perceptions to look at historical realities. ​While visible church institutions and educated elites might suggest a majority shift, demographic data indicates that Christianity is practiced by a statistical minority of the Bodo community (around 10-14%), with the vast majority retaining allegiance to their indigenous faith, Bathouism. ​We explore the indigenous context of Bathouism, centered on the Sijou plant, and the internal crises it faced in the 19th century due to expensive sacrificial rituals. ​The video examines the powerful sociological drivers for conversion. For many Bodos, Christianity was a rational mechanism to escape the rigid stratification of the Hindu caste system, which had labeled them as "Mlechcha" (unclean), and a way to access dignity.
