If that is the case, then this message is for you…and I’m calling it “YES! YOU CAN!!!”. I’m saying “Yes you can because there is a misconception that yacht brokerage is a sales job, and some believe that they are just not sales people. They don’t have the gift of the gab, they aren’t outgoing enough. It always makes me smile when I hear…usually crew…saying “I could never be a broker, I’m too honest”. I’ll come back to the “too honest” comment in a moment, but let me start by saying that if you think you can “sell” a yacht to an ultra high net worth individual in the same way that a car salesman persuades an 18 year old to buy a Ford Mustang with go fast stripes and low profile tires…you won’t be surprised to hear that you are mistaken. The kind of super- wealthy individuals that we deal with have a high degree of wealth, high intelligence, high ambitions, high drive….but are very low on how much time they have. And your job as a broker is to help them find the right yacht for them. It’s really NOT to sell them a yacht. Your job is to listen and understand what they want, what will make them happy, what will be suitable for their family…to go out and find it, provide them with all the details they need to make a decision - everything from the engine hours to the history of the yacht, is it in class, how much will it cost to add zero speed stabilisers or register it commercially, will it fit under the bridge close to their home in Ft Lauderdale…the list goes on and on because your role is to be a problem solver…and resolving the problem of which yacht they should buy is just the start of the challenges that you will need to overcome. YOU will need to overcome so that you can save them the one thing they don’t have a lot of…and that is time. I know yacht brokers all over the world and honestly there is no one single personality that they have. Some are extroverts, some are very shy, some spend a lot of time on the golf course with their clients, some are first in the office and last out every day…and YES. some are very honest, and some sadly…are not. One thing is for sure, there is plenty of space in the yacht brokerage industry for honest, hard working individuals of all personality types. So if you think you CAN’T do it because of your personality type I’m here to tell you…YES YOU CAN.
