Wildfires strike the U.S. every year, threatening homes, businesses and lives. Fire brands can travel long distances and ignite structures at random - even from up to a mile away. Civil and Environmental Engineer Ann Jeffers has been studying how these fire brands cause ignition, lighting roofs and siding or falling into eaves and vents. Jeffers discusses her research, and how homeowners can protect their homes. About the Professor: Ann Jeffers (http://www.cee.umich.edu/people/facul...) is an Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering (http://cee.engin.umich.edu/) at the University of Michigan College of Engineering (http://www.engin.umich.edu/). Her research interests include analysis of structures subjected to extreme load events (e.g., fire, blasts, earthquakes), numerical analysis of complex systems, advanced finite element methods, structural dynamics and structural stability.
