The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Minnesota) approved a forest-based carbon sequestration project in July of 2020. The project, developed as part of the Tribal Land Conservation Initiative, will be implemented under the American Carbon Registry’s Improved Forest Management Methodology, which quantifies greenhouse gas emission reductions beyond current forest management practices. The project covers 8,197 acres of tribal forest land and will protect 5.3 million trees. The project also safeguards critical ecosystems supporting wild rice (known as manoomin in the traditional Ojibwe language). Manoomin is an aquatic crop, growing in local lakes. And it is harvested as a staple crop while playing a large role in the local economy. By using healthy forests as a filter, through this project the Fond du Lac band is ensuring the long-term health of water systems across their reservation. 0:00 - 2:15: Reciprocity with the Land 2:15 - 5:38: Federal Policies Affecting the Band 5:38 - 7:35: The Fond du Lac Band Carbon Project 7:35 - 9:14: Reclaiming Cultural Identity 9:14 - 14:38: Harvesting Manoomin 14:38 - 17:14: Stewarding Healthy Forests into the Future
