Our golden retriever is 8 weeks pregnant! Join us and our sweet Pepper as we discuss what the final week of dog pregnancy looks like... her are coming SOON! It's time to prepare your whelping area, fuel up your car, contact your veterinarian(s), and get yourself completely prepared for the arrival of the puppies. You'll be able to feel and see the puppies moving this week. Continue to keep things calm for your dam, keeping her away from rough and tumble play or stimulation, as the puppies should spend another week in the womb. A puppy's lungs become viable and their sucking reflex develops around day 58. They are viable outside the womb at this point, but have little chance of survival if born any earlier. Your girl will whelp 63 days +/- 1 day from when she ovulated, or 65 days +/- 1 day from her LH surge. If you did progesterone testing prior to breeding, you have a very clear picture of when the puppies should arrive, and when to contact your veterinarian if labor hasn't progressed on time. You can also begin taking your mama dog's temperature 2-4 times a day. Ideally, you should use the same thermometer for consistency. Roughly 24 hours before going into hard labor, your girl's temperature will drop 1-2 degrees from normal often to between 97.5-98.5. About 12 hours prior to whelping, her temperature will rise again. This drop in temperature coincides with her body's progesterone dropping which triggers Stage 1 labor. Feed your girl as much as she would like to eat this week. She may become picky and/or develop diarrhea or vomit the closer she gets to delivery. Encourage her to eat what she desires, and offer it to her in small portions. Do NOT give her extra calcium of any kind until AFTER the first puppy has arrived. Once she is in labor, offer her some vanilla ice cream or a calcium supplement (like OralCal-Plus) in between puppies to help the delivery process. Your mama dog should be producing colostrum (pre-cursor to her regular milk) by the end of this week. It is crucial that each puppy nurse within the first hours after they are born so that they all get some of this nutrient-packed milk from mom.
