Chavez was visiting the U-K en route to Canada from Moscow as part of a three week world tour. Earlier the President met industry chiefs and visited Downing Street. Chavez took office in 1999, and has since has fought to transform Venezuelan politics and depose a political class accused of impoverishing Venezuela through cronyism and corruption. July polls gave Chavez a 55 percent approval rating, the highest ever for an elected president two years into his term. On Thursday he faces a tough challenge when elections are held to choose a new leader for the country's largest labour union. An opposition leader could win the election.
