From mistrust to hope: a patient's journey with functional neurological disorder (FND)

This powerful patient story shares one individual’s experience of feeling dismissed and misunderstood before receiving compassionate, person-centred care that restored her trust in healthcare professionals. In this honest and emotional video, the patient speaks about her journey with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), the importance of being listened to and believed, and how the willingness of clinical teams to learn, understand, and adapt their approach made a real difference to her care. (Update - August 2025 - Rebecca has had a complete recovery and no longer has FND.) She hopes her story will raise awareness of FND and highlight the value of open communication, empathy, and trauma-informed care in supporting patients with complex or lesser-known conditions. This film was produced by Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to support staff learning and encourage reflection on how we listen, respond, and improve the patient experience.
