What does it take to build a resilient local food system? In this #SoilYourselfSeptember video, Prof. Steven Allender shares the story of three community workshops held in the Latrobe Valley, where local people, stakeholders, and Deakin researchers came together to rethink how food systems work. Together, we mapped out the complex web of factors that shape access to healthy, sustainable food — from affordability to availability, from culture to climate. Through open conversations and collective problem-solving, the workshops uncovered both the barriers that hold communities back and the opportunities that can drive change. The outcome? A detailed systems map of the local food landscape and a set of action ideas to tackle food insecurity and promote healthy eating — rooted in community knowledge and experience. This is about resilience, collaboration and creating a healthier future, together. I'm Dr Jake M. Robinson — a microbial ecologist and academic specialising in biodiversity and human health.
