When it comes to iodine therapy, Dr. Brownstein stands tall as the foremost expert in the field. 1. Iodine: The star of the show, iodine takes center stage in this protocol. Dr. Brownstein used to start patients at 50mg of iodine, but recent adjustments have led to lower initial doses like 12.5mg. It's important to start with a dosage that feels comfortable for you and gradually increase it over time. I personally started with just 1 drop of Lugol’s 2% solution which is about 2.5 mg iodine, and increased my dose every few days until I felt good. I am now at Dr. Brownstein’s therapeutic dose of 50 mg and I feel good. I know I could not have started at that dose because even when I started with just 1 drop I felt it was very powerful and therefore increased my dosage gradually. 2. Selenium: This essential trace mineral is a key player in iodine utilization. The dosage ranges from 200mcg to 400mcg. You don’t need to go much more than this even if you increase your iodine dosage. It's worth noting that some individuals may already have high selenium levels without supplementation. Vitamin C: Known for its antioxidant properties, vitamin C is a valuable addition to the protocol. The recommended dosage ranges from 2,000mg to 5,000mg. It's important to obtain vitamin C from both supplements and real food sources, ensuring a well-rounded approach to antioxidant support. The foremost expert on Vitamin C, Andrew Saul, Ph.D., my teacher in Orthomolecular Nutrition, would probably say this is a low dosage. Unrefined Salt: Quality natural salt that has not been refined and mixed with toxins is the go-to choice here. A 1/2 teaspoon of unrefined salt provides essential minerals and supports the iodine supplementation process. We use pink himalayan salt or sea salt. We usually just salt our food to taste without fear in our family. I don’t really monitor my salt intake personally. You can use it in cooking or salting your food as well as sprinkling a little in your water to add minerals and taste to it. We also take a special redox cell signaling supplement supplies an extra dose of good salt as well as boosts immune health and a whole host of other things. Magnesium: Ranging from 200mg to 400mg, magnesium plays a crucial role in this protocol. The dosage may vary based on body weight and activity levels. It's recommended to take small amounts of chelated calcium alongside magnesium, aiming for four times as much magnesium as calcium. I personally don’t take calcium supplements as our family consumes good quality dairy regularly, plus we drink a special herbal calcium tea, which I will talk about later, that helps us fully assimilate the calcium from the dairy we are consuming. 6. Vitamins B2/B3 (ATP Co-Factors): While considered optional, these vitamins can play a vital role in iodine utilization. Starting with them may be wise, but consistent supplementation may not always be necessary. It's worth exploring their potential benefits and consulting with your healthcare provider. Niacin, or Vitamin B3, is another supplement I’ll be expounding more on later. For truly therapeutic use, and emergency purposes, Lugol’s iodine is what I recommend.
