Panelists include: Ebony Elizabeth Thomas, Associate Professor, Literacy, Culture, and International Education Division, University of Pennsylvania, discusses “The Dark Fantastic: Race and the Imagination in Youth Literature, Media, and Culture” highlighting how humans read and listen to stories not only to be informed but also as a way to enter worlds that are not like our own. Philip Nel, University Distinguished Professor, Director, Program in Children's Literature, Kansas State University, examines “The Future of Childhood Nostalgia; or, How to Break Up with Your Favorite Racist Children’s Books” and discusses how it’s difficult to admit how pain and love are entangled in cherished artifacts of our childhood but confronting this fact is the best way to dismantle the White-supremacist delusion of cancel culture — and to create a more inclusive, diverse culture for contemporary children. Michelle Ann Abate, Professor of Literature for Children and Young Adults, Ohio State University, discusses “No Kids Allowed: Children’s Literature for Adults,” which examines the paradoxical new genre of “children’s literature for adults." Poushali Bhadury, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Middle Tennessee State University, talks about "Mirrors and Windows for the 21st Century US Teen: Queer Asian Americans in Young Adult Literature," which focuses on young adult texts that bring in an intersectional LGBTQIA+ lens in their representations of AAPI protagonists, and points out why such diverse representations are vitally necessary for the future of (anti-racist) youth literature in the US and beyond.
