A great ambassador of Indonesian badminton scene for a decade and a half, Taufik Hidayat bade adieu to emotional compatriots and supportive stadium-full fans during Djarum Indonesia Open 2013. The 31-year-old has a special bond with this event, having won it six times, equalling Ardy Wiranata's record en route. Since Hidayat's first victory here in 1999, he went on to become one of the world's most celebrated badminton personalities. Albeit an anticlimactic end to a great campaign which included the 2004 Athens Olympic Men's Singles gold medal and a glittering array of honours in the World Championships, Thomas Cup, Sudirman Cup and Asian Games, Hidayat will walk down the history lane as the Indonesian Legend. [Taufik Hidayat speech - English transcription] "After 17 years playing badminton professionally, I think today is the right time to retire from professional playing career. I would like to express my thanks to Djarum which never cease to sponsor and support the badminton event from year to year and its continuous effort to improve it. I would like to thank Trans7 too for continuously supporting and airing the event live. Also thanks to my management team who has from start to end taught me about life as a professional athlete; media and press for coverage that promotes the badminton sport. Thank you all my fans and my sponsor, Yonex Sunrise who have been supporting me from behind; my parents who have brought me up to be who I am today; my wife and children who always wait for my comeback from tournaments and training, who give me warmth at home. Thanks to BWF, umpires, line judges, and all the people providing me support. I hope with my departure Indonesian badminton will continue to progress further in future. I hope my journey will leave all the positive things in Indonesian badminton and my successors to succeed and achieve greater performance in the Indonesian and international badminton scene. Not to forget, I would like to thank my coach very much who has been supporting me from 1996 until today, and my management team again for all supports. Thanks to all present at Istora stadium today."
