Re-tying a Gertrude Jekyll climbing rose to a trellis fence. A full re-tie of a Gertrude Jekyll climbing rose to trellis in july. Certainly not the right time of year to be doing this job as the rose is in its first and most bountiful flush of flowers of the year. Having said that, most have gone over slightly and could do with deadheading anyway and I try to keep as many that haven't gone past their best as possible. Ideally a job you would do in the autumn/winter (check my other rose tying vids) for many reasons. This is not one of my regularly visited gardens, so being called in for a summer tidy was my only chance of getting the rose back in check. The last time it was fully re-tied would have been 2-3 years before this (and in the autumn/winter!). Re-tying at this time of year though not ideal or recommended is ok, this variety of rose is repeat flowering and will respond well putting on lots of new growth, as well as some flowers quickly as you will see. For best results, performing a similar though much smaller job in the following autumn/winter will see the rose at its best next year. Alternatively, you could just do the job once in the autumn/winter, and then enjoy the rose all next year.
