Beyond the Stories – Ovarian Cancer Prevention

Introducing “Opportunistic Salpingectomy as a Strategy for Ovarian Cancer Prevention”, the second video of our Beyond the Stories video series, funded by Michael Smith Health Research BC. High-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) is the most common and lethal form of ovarian cancer. Research over the past few decades has provided substantial evidence that HGSOC originates in the fallopian tubes rather than in the ovaries. Therefore, opportunistic salpingectomy (OS) is a recommended practice of removing the fallopian tubes for patients undergoing a hysterectomy or tubal ligation in the effort to prevent ovarian cancer. In general, OS is designed to prevent the 80% of ovarian cancers in patients who have no known genetic risks for this cancer. In this video, Dr. Gillian Hanley discusses the practice of OS and her research on the safety and effectiveness of the procedure as an ovarian cancer prevention strategy. The video also features Justine Greene and Dr. Janice Kwon, both patients who had undergone an OS. The GCI would also like to congratulate Dr. Hanley and her team, who published their study findings on OS for ovarian cancer prevention in the JAMA Network Open. With their 9 years of follow-up data, they did not observe a single case of HGSOC in the group that had undergone OS, which is significantly fewer than the expected numbers.
