A female red fox leaps from the top of her den while her kits show curiosity more than concern.  Red foxes are one of the world’s most widely occurring carnivores ranging across North America, Europe, most of Asia, and even North Africa.  Despite cohabiting with humans for thousands of years, likely benefiting from human presence, they have never become pets, leaving the evolution of “man’s best friend” to the domestication of wolves.  It is interesting that a feared species, the wolf, became domesticated while one recognized for its intelligence, the wily fox did not.
