Interpretation of folk dances that originate from Philippines. Done by Culture Philippines of Ontario, Canada. Recorded in Monção, Portugal, on 03/08/2025. https://culturephilippinesofontario.com/ Bailes folclóricos filipinos interpretados pola Culture Philippines of Ontario, de Canadá. Gravado en Monção o 03/08/2025 no 40º Festival FolMonção O Mundo a Dançar. Explanation of the dances: Bulaklakan is a traditional and joyful dance dedicated to the Virgin Mary, often performed as part of the Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan festivities during the month of May. Bulaklakan is derived from the word "bulaklak", the tagalog word for flower. The female dancers hold "balantok" or "girnalda" (garlands) decorated with leaves and flowers. It's followed by the Philippine national dance called “Tinikling.” Tinikling, often called the bamboo dance and one of the most famous dances from the Philippines, drew inspiration from the farmers as they set traps to catch tikling birds from the rice paddies. The dance mimics the playful movements of tikling birds as they forage in rice fields while avoiding the bamboo traps.
