Join me as I embark on the journey of building a scale model of the Fram, a legendary ship of exploration. The Fram, constructed in 1892, was the first ship specially built in Norway for polar research. Designed by Colin Archer, it is renowned for its incredible resilience to ice pressure and its pivotal role in groundbreaking Arctic and Antarctic expeditions led by Fridtjof Nansen, Otto Sverdrup, and Roald Amundsen. In this series, I’ll take you through every step of the building process, from unboxing the kit to the final finishing touches. Unlike my San Felipe model, where I went for a dark, weathered, and fearsome look, I aim to present the Fram as shiny and pristine—right out of the factory, ready for its first voyage. Along the way, I’ll share insights into this historic vessel, discuss modeling techniques, and showcase the artistry of recreating a ship that changed the course of exploration history. Perfect for model shipbuilders, history enthusiasts, and fans of craftsmanship! In this video, I dive into the first planking process. While this may not be the historically accurate method, I’ll explain the correct approach and share my personal technique that ensures a smooth and even hull. Throughout this video, I’ll guide you through: ✔️ Alternating planks to prevent hull deformation ✔️ Following the natural curve of the ship for a seamless fit ✔️ Using full-length planks and adjusting them for a perfect finish ✔️ Techniques for tapering and shaping planks efficiently ✔️ Avoiding gaps and unnecessary filler pieces By the end, you’ll see how I sanded and refineed the hull to prepare for the next steps—whether it’s the second planking or painting. #scalemodel #shipbuilding #hobby @occre / occre https://occre.com/en/products/fram 00:00 Start 00:07 Welcome & video content by me 00:41 Start first planking 01:25 How I fit & fill in triangular pieces 02:05 Fitting a complete plank 05:06 Check if everything fits 07:38 Adjusting the stern plank above 09:41 Placing the plank 10:41 Fast forward: halfway done method explanation 12:26 How it should be done technically 12:50 Changing the pattern 13:43 First planking done 14:37 End screens
