A/Prof Mark Muthiah - Bile Acid and Its Potential for Pathogenesis in HCC

Bile acids are increasingly recognized not only as digestive detergents but also as potent signaling molecules with critical roles in metabolic regulation, inflammation, and carcinogenesis. This talk will review the evolving understanding of bile acid physiology and its contribution to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) pathogenesis, and how targetable changes in the the bile acid biome can give rise to these changes. The pathways of bile acid synthesis and their regulation under normal physiological conditions will be covered. Alterations of bile acid composition and signaling observed in NBNC HCC will be covered. This will then lead to changes seen in MASLD, the most common chronic liver disease in the world globally. Finally, the clinical relevance of this work will be covered.
