Phillip Sear plays the last piece - 'The song of the Provençale shepherds' - from an untitled set of six from 1923 by the French composer Marc Delmas (1885-1931). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The French composer and writer on music Marc Delmas (1885-1931) studied at the Paris Conservatoire. In 1913, he and Marcel Dupré were tied for first prize on the first ballot of the Prix de Rome, and Saint-Saëns opted for Dupré as a 'tie-break'. Delmas wrote in many forms: opera, choral and chamber music, in particular. He used a rather conservative idiom, which is maybe why his music is little heard today. This piece is essentially a bourree - an energetic dance normally associated with the Auvergne region of France. The pieces in this set have individual dedicatees: this one was dedicated to Madame Andrée Arnoult-Roelens, a pianist active in Parisian chamber music in the 1920s (her husband was also a pianist). My thumbnail shows a detail from 'Retour de troupeau' by Emile Loubon (1809–1863), a French artist who specialised in Provençale landscapes.
