How long can a person survive without oxygen before they die? Do you believe in miracles? Joan Latta is a medical miracle defying the odds and overcoming adversity in ways that Doctors would have never said was possible. Joan’s Mum taught her to swallow as an Infant and her father trained her to hike, she has walked further than most people would dream of doing in their life. Joan went through mainstream school when the Doctors said that she would never be able to. Completing BETECs and GCSEs, she is now studying for her Open University degree. This story of an incredible young lady and her family’s determination for her to live a ‘normal’ life will inspire people and challenge their perceptions of disability and the true meaning of determination. "I was starved of oxygen at birth for 28 minutes. Doctors said that I wouldn't survive my first 24 hours. 24 years later I am now a Young Ambassador for the Princes Trust. I established my own disability awareness company and speak motivationally to people in all walks of life about living with cerebral palsy. I hiked 640 miles in 10 weeks and run 18 miles in less than 4 hours. I am now studying an Open University degree and I am also an Associate Tutor at University of East Anglia. Not bad for someone that shouldn't even be alive! This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
