This, described by a writer of mountain guide as a “hike”, quickly turned into a special forces marathon. In mid-July the feeling of being denied entry to most countries when coming from the UK was already feeling like the norm. We had a plan to go to the Italian Alps, but one week before we left, Italy imposed a quarantine to all arrivals coming from the UK. Time to do a drastic 180 turn and change plans altogether. We already had a plan B. Go to the Pyrenees and do a couple of the many stunning looking routes found there. Being the first time we were in the Pyrenees our route of choice was definitely ego-driven… why not climb the highest ones first? We chose Pico de Posets, the second highest mountain in the Pyrenees, as our first route. The “normal” route looked like a plod through loose rock and scree, but they’re more ways to skin a cat. The route we chose is called Espadas-Posets and traverses over 6 peaks that are over 3000 meters, offering some of the best views I ever saw. From most of the route descriptions that I read, people don’t rate this as being too difficult. This might be due to the poor memory that mountaineers are very well known for. We spend 4 hours and 30 mins on that ridge, mostly with our heads down and quiet, not saying too much to each other, trying to focus on whatever was ahead. It took us 18 hours to get back down to safety, arriving back in the dark and starving, half broken, but happy. Pico de Posets, ya beautiful!!
