Global Public Opinion: How Does the World See China?

March 28, 2025 — To formally launch the Global Public Opinion on China (GPOC) (https://asiasociety.org/policy-instit...) — an interactive platform that compiles and visualizes insights from more than 2,600 global surveys tracking views on China — the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis (CCA) hosts a panel discussion exploring how public sentiment is shaping the international landscape. Moderated by Neil Thomas, CCA fellow on Chinese Politics, the conversation features Andrew Chubb, CCA fellow on Foreign Policy and National Security and lead researcher for the GPOC project; Maria Repnikova, associate professor of Global Communication at Georgia State University; and Cindy Yu, assistant editor at the Spectator and host of the Chinese Whispers podcast. The panel examines how citizens around the world perceive China and the implications of these views for the evolving U.S.-China strategic competition. It also delves into how China’s own citizens, elites, and party-state actors view the country's international image — and what this reveals about Beijing’s global ambitions and concerns.
