প্রথম আলোতে প্রকাশিত একটি লেখা অনুসারে ২০২০ সালে ৩১ মে এসএসসির ফলাফল প্রকাশের পর ২৪ ঘন্টার মধ্যে মোট ১২ শিক্ষার্থী (নয়জন মেয়ে, তিনজন ছেলে) আত্মহত্যা করেছে এবং একজন চেষ্টা চালিয়েছে। গত তিন বছরে এসএসসি পরীক্ষার পর ১৫০ শিক্ষার্থী আত্মহত্যা করে আর ৩ হাজার ৭৫০ জনের কিছু বেশি আত্মহত্যার চেষ্টা করে। এর মধ্যে ৪০০ জন আবার দ্বিতীয়বার চেষ্টা করেছিল। এত আত্মহত্যা কি ‘পরীক্ষার’ বিষাক্ত ফল নয়? Our students learn from their parents and teachers that their exam results are central to their existence. These students learn they are only valued and loved if they do well in their exams. This puts their lovability under a question mark. These students start feeling that if they somehow do badly in exams their existence becomes totally futile. At the same time, these students who are at their tender age have not yet developed enough emotional resilience to deal with a failure or setback which leaves them no choice but to end their lives! The parents also feel the pressure that their children must perform fantastically well in their exams like their colleagues' or neighbors' children. This puts more pressure on their children to perform! The time has come for the teachers and parents to reevaluate their values and priorities about their children and nurture them well with what they really need for their mental growth. Also, this is the age of information-technology where changes are happening very fast and it is almost certain that these young people will not stick to one profession and spend their entire life behind one profession like their previous generations. This means what is important is to teach these children to deal with abrupt changes and develop emotional resilience so as to be able to deal with their real-life circumstances. On these children's part, they will need to be able to respect their parents' and teachers' opinions and examine them so that they don't let those in authority position to call the final shots. Open and frank table conversations between the children and their teachers and parents can bridge the gap between them and make better decisions for the children's lives.
