A powerful kona storm is expected to impact the Hawaiian Islands this week through the weekend, bringing the threat of heavy rain, strong winds, and possible severe thunderstorms statewide. National Weather Service meteorologist Patrick Blood says the storm system will draw deep tropical moisture into the islands, significantly increasing the risk of flash flooding over the next several days. The threat of flooding is expected to begin first on Kauai Tuesday, followed by Oahu Tuesday night. Maui County could see impacts starting Wednesday, with the Big Island expected to feel the effects by Wednesday night. As the system strengthens later in the week, forecasters say conditions could become more dangerous. Damaging southerly winds and the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to increase statewide heading into Friday and Saturday, which could bring the most impactful weather. Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware and monitor updates from the National Weather Service as the storm develops.
