We came face to face with the realities of visiting Costa Rica in January. It's the dry season for Costa Rica which means that sometimes the cloud forest is not so... cloudy. We chose to visit the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve as opposed to Monteverde because we heard it was less crowded and equally as beautiful. Unfortunately, we seemed to pick the one day that the clouds decided not to show up. Although we were really bummed, the one big perk was that we finally got to see Arenal Volcano in all its magnificent glory! Regardless, if you're looking for things to do in Monteverde, we definitely still recommend Santa Elena.
