It is a symbol - the (place de la) Republique." 12. Wide of place de la Republique STORYLINE: Several hundred supporters of the newly freed French hostages, the veteran reporter for the Liberation newspaper Florence Aubenas and her Iraqi assistant Hussein Hanoun turned out at the Place de la Republique in Paris to celebrate their release on Sunday. The supporters watched as immense photos of the two former hostages were removed from the square. The photos were put in place less than two weeks after they were taken hostage in order to keep their captivity in the public consciousness. During her captivity Aubenas' supporters organised constant concerts, rallies, balloon launches and torch-lit vigils. Each day, Liberation's cover had a count of how many days Aubenas and her guide had been captive.
