Elverhoj museum; Solvang's architecture; Windmills; The Oldest Windmill; Solvang History and Traditions; Movie locations Welcome to our channel! In today's video, we take you on a journey to the historic town of Solvang, California. Located about 100 miles north of Los Angeles on the picturesque Central Coast, Solvang is a charming small town known as the "Danish Capital of America." Our first stop is the Elverhoj Museum, housed in a beautifully hand-crafted residence that once belonged to the renowned artist and sculptor, Viggo Brandt-Erichsen. As we explore the museum, we discover fascinating exhibits showcasing the rich history and heritage of Solvang. Solvang's architecture is truly unique, reflecting its Danish influence. From the iconic windmills to the design of the buildings, the town exudes Danish charm. We visit the "Round Tower," a 1/3rd size replica of the famous 17th-century observatory in Copenhagen, which stands as a testament to Solvang's Danish-inspired architecture. One of the highlights of our visit is the Danish Inn's windmill, one of four in Solvang. We learn about its history and the threat it faced before being preserved as an iconic symbol of the town. Ferdinand Sorensen, a Solvang resident, played a significant role in popularizing Danish stylings in the area, including the construction of the first Danish windmill in 1946. As we delve deeper into Solvang's past, we discover Wulff's Windmill, a functional windmill built in 1922 by JC Wulff on his farm. It predates all other windmills in the area, serving as a testament to the town's early Danish roots. Solvang's journey from a modest settlement to a thriving tourist destination is a captivating story. Established in 1911 by Danish-Americans seeking a warmer location, the town grew slowly until its potential as a tourism hub was realized in the 1940s. A pivotal moment came when the popular "Saturday Evening Post" featured an article titled "Little Denmark," which put Solvang on the map and transformed it into a tourist hotspot. In our exploration, we come across interesting tidbits about Solvang's unique traditions and community spirit. The town's residents take part in their own street cleaning, responding eagerly to a notice published in the local newspaper. We also learn about the belief that storks on shop rooftops bring good luck, although the storks themselves are no longer present. The Elverhoj museum provides us with a glimpse into Solvang's past, featuring a diorama depicting the town as it was in the 1920s. We discover that the original 1911 Folk School building still stands today, making it the oldest structure in town. The diorama also showcases Bethania Church, the first building in Solvang to adopt Danish architectural style, and the local elementary school built in 1940. To add a touch of excitement to our visit, we explore some filming locations from the 1961 thriller "Homicidal," which takes place in Solvang. We stumble upon Ballard's little red schoolhouse, a historic building that is still in use after 50 years. No visit to Solvang would be complete without indulging in their world-famous Aebleskivers. These delicious Danish pastries delight our taste buds and provide the perfect ending to our exploration of this enchanting town.
