All Female B-1 Bomber Crew Makes History at Ellsworth Bomber Squadron

A B-1 taxied on the flight line at Ellsworth Air Force Base, preparing to takeoff. What made this flight unique was not the mission – to train and hone the Airmen’s skills while they flew in the local area. What made this March 21 flight remarkable was that the entire aircrew was comprised of female aviators from the 34th Bomb Squadron. The all-female crew consisted of two B-1 pilots, Capts. Lillian Pryor and Lauren Olme, and two weapon systems officers, Capt. Danielle Zidack and 1st Lt. Kimberly Auton. Capt. Lacey Koelling, the 34th Aircraft Maintenance Unit officer in charge, also supported the bomber’s preflight maintenance. Ellsworth AFB honors Women's History Month with special mission: The month of March is Women's History Month. To honor that, Ellsworth Air Force Base conducted a mission to highlight the impact of female Airmen. Black Hills FOX's Jon Wilson was there and has more. Weapons Systems Officer, Captain Danielle Zidack says, "It means everything to me to be in the air with these four courageous women. I can't think of anything better to do, and just that this is my job, it's amazing." In honor of Women's History Month, a team of seven women, four aviators, two maintainers, and a step-briefer from the 28th Bomb Wing worked together on a mission. Four of those seven women went in the air. Co-Pilot, Captain Lillian Pryor says, "Means a lot to me to get the opportunity to fly with these really brave and smart women. I look up to them every day, so I've learned a lot from them." Zidack says, "Every day is practicing, so every day we go out and we fly training missions, and every day you learn something new about the B-1. So I've been here for 2.5 years, I've been flying the B-1 for three years, and I constantly learn new things." A female crew was also in control on the ground for this event that rarely happens. Aircraft Maintenance Unit Officer In Charge, Captain Lacey Koelling says, "It's a pretty neat experience. I've been a Maintenance Officer for almost seven years, and I've never had an all female crew launching." This opportunity is also a time for these women to thank those who came before them. Zidack says, "With this happening, today it's important to mention the women who came before us, paving the way. And also to inspire young girls who hope to follow a similar path. Koelling says, "I think it's representative of you can do anything that you want to, whether male or female.
