This video from Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters provides a step-by-step guide on how to administer IV antibiotics at home, emphasizing cleanliness and proper technique throughout the process. If you have any questions, please contact your healthcare provider. Here's a summary of the key steps: Preparation: Begin by cleaning your workspace and washing your hands thoroughly for 20 seconds with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Gather all necessary supplies, using your instruction sheet as a guide, and wash your hands again. Cleaning the End Cap: Remove and discard the orange or green cap cover, but keep the clear cap on at all times. Using your non-dominant hand to hold the line, scrub the end of the clear cap with an alcohol pad for 15 seconds, focusing on the top and threads. Allow it to air dry for another 15 seconds. Flushing with Saline: Keep control of the line to avoid contamination. Remove the cap from the saline syringe, push out any air bubbles, then push and twist the syringe onto the cap. If the line has a clamp, unclamp it. Pulse flush the entire saline syringe, then firmly untwist to disconnect and discard it. Attaching IV Antibiotics: Clean the end of the cap again with an alcohol pad, scrubbing for 15 seconds and letting it dry. Remove the end cap from the antibiotic tubing, then push and twist the tubing into the cap. Unclamp the IV antibiotic tubing to release the medicine until the medicine ball is empty, which may take 20 to 45 minutes. Removing Antibiotic Tubing and Re-cleaning: Wash your hands again. Hold the clear cap firmly, twist and remove the antibiotic tubing, then discard it. Clean the end of the clear cap again with an alcohol pad for 15 seconds, letting it dry. Flushing with Saline (Post-Antibiotic): Take the cap off the saline syringe, push out air, then push and twist it onto the cap. Unclamp the line if needed. Pulse flush the entire saline syringe, then disconnect and discard. Attaching and Flushing with Heparin: Clean the cap again with a new alcohol pad, scrubbing for 15 seconds and letting it dry. Take the cap off the heparin syringe, push out air, then push and twist it onto the cap. Pulse flush the specified amount of heparin, then firmly untwist to disconnect and discard. Attaching New Cap Cover: Attach the new orange or green cap cover by pushing firmly and twisting it onto the cap. Finally, clamp the line if necessary.
