Nuke Em is a very common variation of volleyball. The rules vary depending on the group and sometimes on the situation and there are actually many different optional rules. The basic difference between Nuke Em and volleyball is that in Nuke Em you catch and throw the ball instead of bumping, volleying, or hitting it. This makes it a great game for children who are too young to play regular volleyball or for groups of mixed ages and athletic abilities. In our area, the most common way to play is with elimination rules, where you are trying to get the players on the other team out. Anytime a player doesn’t catch the ball, the closest player to the ball (or the one who dropped it) is out of the game. If you get “out” your teammates can try to get you back in. They do this by catching the ball with 1 hand or by throwing an “Ace,” a serve that’s untouched. Whichever team lasts the longest without running out of players wins!
