As I take a nostalgic journey back to my childhood in Singapore during the vibrant 1970s! Living in a close-knit neighborhood, we knew all our neighbors well and often exchanged delicious home-cooked meals. The thrill of playing carefree games with the kids filled our days with laughter and joy. We even swam in the rain and floods, turning a challenging situation into a fun adventure, while earning a little extra money by pushing stalled cars out of the rising water. Those were truly golden days, marked by peace, friendly faces, and cherished moments. Every season, our neighborhood came alive with gatherings—chatting, eating, laughing, dancing, and singing together at potlucks featuring all kinds of delightful dishes. As we celebrate the 60th birthday of our beloved Singapore, I can’t help but feel immense pride in being Singaporean.
