Hey Guys, Today is the 22nd of September, which means in Bulgaria it is Independence Day!! To celebrate my village made a re-enactment of a famous attack on the village by the Turks and was liberated by the Russians... Ottoman Period (1396–1878) After the fall of the Second Bulgarian Empire, Bulgaria was absorbed into the Ottoman Empire, which lasted for nearly five centuries. The Ottoman period shaped the demographics and culture of many small Bulgarian villages, including Aglen. Under Ottoman rule, villages were often subject to heavy taxation, and many people in the region converted to Islam to escape this burden, although large parts of the Bulgarian population remained Orthodox Christian. Aglen would have been a rural village during this period, and like other villages in Bulgaria, it likely experienced economic hardship under Ottoman rule. Despite these challenges, local traditions, Christian practices, and Bulgarian identity were preserved through folklore, religious festivals, and secret schools known as "cell schools" where children were taught in Bulgarian. Bulgarian National Revival (18th–19th centuries) During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Bulgarian National Revival was a period of cultural resurgence, education, and resistance to Ottoman rule. The love for the Bulgarian language, culture, and Orthodox Christianity flourished. Many small villages, including Aglen, would have been influenced by this national awakening. This period saw the construction of new churches and schools in rural areas. Liberation and Modern Bulgaria The Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 led to Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman rule, and the Treaty of Berlin in 1878 recognized Bulgaria as an autonomous principality. Aglen, like other villages, transitioned into the new Bulgarian state and began to modernize in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The agricultural economy of small villages like Aglen played a crucial role in the development of the country, but it remained largely a rural, agricultural community.
