For more helpful music production tutorials, check out http://creatingedm.com Envelopes are the most common type of modulation controller in music production and sound design. This helpful video tutorial shows you how it works and why, so you can gain a deeper understanding of how to do it yourself! To achieve the type of modulation you want on any given parameter through the use of an envelope, you first need to understand the envelope! This lesson covers it all from the beginning. It breaks down what ADSR is (Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release) and provides a very simple analogy to help you fully understand how the envelope curve is actually affecting the parameter it is assigned to control. Although the video features NI Massive as the synth being used, you can use any synth to follow along and still achieve the same exact results. After a modulation controller is assigned to a parameter, in this case it is an envelope and the amp knob of the oscillator being used, the modulation direction and depth needs to be set. Most synths allow you to modulate in either direction and set specific starting and ending points for the modulation range. Once programmed, you should hear the effects immediately if notes are being played. Although the only examples in this tutorial are volume, pitch and filter cutoff modulation, there are many other kinds of things you can do with basic envelope modulation. You can even modulate another envelope with your first envelope. Or modulate a parameter within the same envelope! The only limitations here are those set by the synth you are using and your own imagination. And using the same envelope to modulate many parameters at once throughout a synth is a great way to program consistent changes and bring continuity to your sounds and your music. If you are interested in seeing more envelope modulation in action, try loading up some factory presets in your favorite synth. Often times, the presets that are included with a synth are there to showcase what the synth is capable of, how certain sounds are programmed and are not necessarily intended to be the most useful or impressive sounds. So they make an excellent learning tool! Another great way to help wrap your mind around the concept of using envelopes to modulate parameters is to simply being experimenting freely. Try assigning an envelope to control the pitch of an oscillator and begin making random changes to the envelope curve (shape) and see what happens. Now assign the same envelope to one more parameter in the synth, just make sure it is a parameter that is actively involved in the sound you are hearing so you can hear the changes. Slowly building more complex modulation schemes is a fantastic way to learn and breakthrough mental barriers quickly! Cheers, OhmLab
