B, a Hope Dealer” “If you’re going to be a dealer, deal hope” Exclusive Interview with Kathryn Griffin The story of the hope dealer I interviewed this month, that is, the pain and suffering part of her story, breaks my heart. First, let me give you some of the stats so you get an idea of not only the pain part of her story but an idea of how large this really is. Hold on tight for this one. We’re talking about addiction, prostitution and human trafficking; usually mixed together, but the first part I’ll focus on is trafficking. Slavery According to the University of Texas, Austin, there are more than 300,000 victims of human trafficking in Texas alone, which includes almost 79,000 minors and youth victims of sex trafficking. Slavery. Actual slavery. It’s abhorrent, it’s sickening and it’s real. Every single of these people is someone else’s precious son or daughter. Pretty much all of them are addicts. Their trauma is so far off the scale, you really can’t measure it. Many are actually abducted, just like we saw on the movie, “Taken” a few years back, others are brought in from elsewhere, some are runaways who found a pimp and others, the smallest percentage, are slaves to their master, addiction, alone. This may be the deepest, darkest, ugliest corner of addiction. It should bring chills to your skin and give you a sick feeling in your stomach, particularly if you’re a parent. I hope it does because that means you still have compassion, empathy and see the value in others. A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS. A BEAKEN OF HOPE! My fourth hope dealer is a very bright light. She’s weathered many storms, any one of which are the size and strength to take out virtually anyone caught in them. The “Category 5” storms of prostitution, drugs, prison and abuse. She’s weathered them all and when you’re in her presence, you know you’re talking to someone who’s a force to be reckoned with themselves. You don’t meet many people who are movie or comic book type super-heroes in real life. The only time you hear stories like these are in fiction. This one is real. She’s my friend. She’s a super hero. She’s one of the most influential people in the 4th largest city in America, a bright light and as she continues giving hope to the hopeless, they too are paying it forward becoming superheroes, bright lights, and hope dealers themselves. The Hope Dealer I was thrilled to speak with this month is my friend, Kathryn, “Kathy”, Griffin-Grinan.” For this entire features, subscribe for free to The #1 Addiction, Sobriety and Recovery Magazine in the World Download Now.
