Eid al-Fitr, celebrated by Muslims worldwide each year at the end of Ramadan, is supposed to be a joyous holiday marked by prayers and family gatherings. It is also a time when children receive new clothes and monetary gifts. But for Fatima Al-Absi and her family, it's just a normal day, devoid of joy. On Sunday morning, the 57-year-old grandmother visited the cemetery in Beit Lahia with her children and grandchildren to pray for her late husband who was killed during the war. “They used to greet him and kiss him the moment they wake up every Eid,” she said, recalling the cherished tradition her children followed on Eid mornings. The family of eight have returned to their destroyed family home in Jabaliya to share their first breakfast after the holy month of Ramadan. Gathered in a living room with cracked walls and barely any furniture, they bake Eid biscuits, and make tea. But Fatima says it is not like before, when her husband was alive. “Today is like any other day that passes. When their father was alive, he’d wake up and greet them during the first hours of Eid morning. All these things no longer exist for me. Who would they greet in the morning and call Dad. We forgot all those moments in our lives,” she said. Al-Absi’s four grandchildren now play outside their apartment building which has been partially destroyed and surrounded with other buildings reduced to rubble. Israel ended the ceasefire with Hamas and resumed the 17-month war earlier this month when the militant group refused to accept changes to the agreement reached in January.
