Accommodating up to eight passengers, with proper 4x4 "go anywhere" abilities and all for under R500,000 is a tall order to match. I was fortunate enough to spend several weeks seeing out 2022 behind the wheel of the Mahindra Scorpio Adventure S11 family SUV. Still, in its first generation, the Scorpio's steady refinements since 2002 have kept it reinvigorated, and although its styling is unique, you have to love its no-nonsense approach to simply getting any job done. With the introduction of the Mahindra Scorpio-N fast approaching, it seemed simply fitting to re-visit and enjoy some proper time on all road surfaces in the Scorpio Adventure. The Drive The mHawk 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine has always been a big talking point for Mahindra, in large part due to its nippy make-up, frugal ability, and impressive power delivery. Paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, the powerplant churns out 103 kW of power and 280 Nm of torque making for impressive shove even when loaded to full capacity. On The Inside The interior is solidly built, thanks to toughened materials, a semi-leather upholster and front foldable armrests which added a level of comfort. The central multimedia display offers a clear, easy-to-navigate media system with Bluetooth connectivity and an array of driving-related information at hand. Advertised as an 8-seater, the interior is certainly spacious, however, for comparative sakes, I refer to this vehicle as a 7-seater, simply because all other family SUVs take on this profile, and in fairness 8 adults would be a real squeeze. All, in all, the interior space is impressive, configurable, and rugged to fit the exterior image. Conclusion and Pricing Perhaps the biggest trump card of the Mahindra Scorpio is its affordability factor. In true Mahindra style, it's all about solid and unbeatable value. Considering its space, true rugged ability, and overall bold packaging, with pricing starting from below R400,000, this is simply unbeatable.
