Shel Silverstein's mustard ice cream, Willy Wonka's sugar balloons, Dr. Suess's islands of Da Dake, Homer Simpsons' tomacco plant: are these just silly ideas or perhaps something more? In his talk, Dr. Barry Kudrowitz explores how cartoons, comics, and science fiction are more than just entertainment for kids and "kidults"—they are a critical player in advancing society and technology. Absurd concepts presented in children's media can be just shy of being innovative -- just one step away from feasibility or value in the zone of the "adjacent possible". From The Simpsons to Jules Verne, he reveals the surprising ways imaginative and playful storytelling initiates a critical dialogue between writers and animators and scientists and engineers which leads to innovation and real-world technological advancements. Dr. Barry Kudrowitz explores innovation through the intersection of design, humor, and play in everyday life. He is a professor, researcher, and department head at the University of Minnesota. His recent book "Sparking Creativity: How Play and Humor Fuel Innovation and Design" draws from 19 years of academic research into how playfulness fosters creativity and problem-solving skills. Barry’s quirky approach to design inspires audiences to embrace curiosity and unconventional ideas. With a background in engineering and product design and a passion for immersive experiences, he challenges perceptions of what it means to innovate in a rapidly changing world. Barry received his PhD from MIT studying creativity, humor, and idea generation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
