UD Global Populism lecture: "Trump, Populism and the Politics of Resentment"

Bart Bonikowksi, Harvard University, presented at the University of Delaware on May 3, 2018, for the Global Populism Lecture Series 2017-18: "Trump, Populism and the Politics of Resentment." The Center for Global & Area Studies at UD is committed to tackling the most profound questions and problems of our time. To help students and faculty gain a sharper understanding of the rise of Global Populism, its causes and implications, the Center has invited several speakers to campus. Part of the Center's Global Populism Lecture Series, Harvard professor of sociology Bart Bonikowski presented the final lecture on May 3, 2018. Donald Trump’s 2016 election has been interpreted as an unexpected victory for populism in the United States. But should we put populism at the core of radical-right politics? Bart Bonikowski, who researches the intersection of sociology and politics at Harvard, argues for a narrower definition of populism, one that reveals a more fundamental feature of contemporary democracies: an escalating tension between alternative conceptions of nationhood, which increasingly is shaping political decision-making. These nationalist cleavages have been politically mobilized amid structural changes that have generated fears within the white majority of a loss in status — with potentially pernicious consequences for group relations and democratic stability.
