Part 3 in the Socratic Method Series, we take an initial look at the state of perplexity - in Greek: aporia - that follows the elenchos (see Part 2 of this series), the standard refutational procedure that Socrates uses. I consider both the standard account and the critical perspective argued by John Beversluis. Philosophers use various methods and Socratic Method is one of the oldest in the methodological toolkit. The Socratic elenchos has applications that go beyond philosophy, probably the best known uses are in the cross-examinational methods used by lawyers when testing witness testimony in court.
