As the disillusioned anarchist Larry Slade, drinking himself to death in a Lower Manhattan saloon, he’s approached by young Don Parritt (Jeff Bridges), whose mother—Larry’s former lover—has just been arrested for a bombing plot. (Playwright Eugene O’Neill based the character on Donald Vose, who ratted out his own mother and her fellow conspirators after an attack on the Los Angeles Times building in 1910).
