At Lenox Hill Neurosurgery we are experts in vascular malformations of the face, head and neck. These are benign congenital vascular lesions present since birth. Some are caused by weakness in the wall of the veins or the lymphatic system, and others are caused because of abnormal connections between arteries and veins. They are categorized into venous malformations, lymphatic malformations or arteriovenous malformations. They can enlarge and predispose to bleeding, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, impaired vision, and abnormal development of facial structures and teeth depending on the location and size. Treatment can involve surgery, sclerotherapy, embolization or laser therapy. Sclerotherapy is performed by injecting a medication into the vascular malformation that will injure the wall, shrink it and prevent it from growing. Embolization is performed by navigating catheters into the vessels of the AVM and closing them by injecting medical crazy glue. The interdisciplinary team at Lenox Hill Hospital composed of vascular plastic surgeons, neuro-endovascular surgeons, and radiologists are involved in the decision making to determine the ideal treatment option for your child. Your child‘s safety and your wellbeing is our goal. Thank you for choosing Lenox Hill Neurosurgery.
